Open Source Alternatives To Tech Pubs Tools

Given how hard it is for students (and their programs) to afford the expensive tools in our profession, I thought it might help to pass along these alternatives to commercial products. I think anyone breaking into the field (or a new type of tool) would do very well to train up on these open source tools and create portfolio pieces with them.

STC Austin: Job Bank

The Austin Job Bank Committee has been active for 11 years and is responsible for one of many benefits of STC membership. Anyone can use the Job Bank and the Resume Bank; you do not have to be a member of STC. There is no fee to members for using the Resume Bank and only a small fee to non-members, to defray administrative expenses. The STC Job Bank helps employers locate technical communicators by publicizing company job openings and posting current resumes of technical communicators in the job market. STC publishes news about positions and employment resources available to technical communicators on a local, national, and international level. The Job Bank Committee is not an employment service; we simply facilitate information-sharing about positions for technical communicators and the people available to fill them. The responsibility for judging qualifications, making contact, and discussing terms rests solely with the job-seekers and the employers involved.
