The National Writers Union (NWU) is the trade union for freelance writers of all genres who work for American publishers or employers. We are committed to improving the economic and working conditions of freelance writers through the collective strength of our 6500 members in 17 local chapters throughout the country. We are a modern, innovative union offering grievance resolution, industry campaigns, contract advice, health & dental plans, member education, job banks, networking, social events, and much more. The National Writers Union is affiliated with the United Automobile Workers (UAW) and through them with the AFL-CIO.

Offshoring of Tech Writing: A Roundtable Discussion  (link broken)

We organized this Roundtable because we thought we could get technical publications managers together to talk about the threat of offshoring and come up with ideas and strategies to protect our jobs. However, we learned that offshoring is inevitable and technical writers need to adapt. The speakers offered possible strategies for adaptation.

As professionals in the communications arts we know that people work better if they have clear expectations of equitable treatment. In order to promote fair standards and encourage professional working relationships, the Technical Writers Trade Group of the National Writers Union presents the following Code of Professional Practice for technical writers in the hardware and software industries.
