Slide-By-Slide Animations: Traditional Countdown

In this tutorial, you will learn how to create a simple traditional countdown animation in 5 slides (I normally call it a Slide By Slide animation). This is achievable in a single slide (Stacking animation), but to reduce the difficulty, I will show you a simple one which can be editable easily at a later time.

Stacking/Overlapping/Layering Animations: Spiral Effect

I have experimented many ways to create a spiral effect on text. This requires the overlapping technique. The simplest way is to make use of Pinwheel Entrance effect to do the job, while the best way to create the most realistic impact is to have combination of different effects. The drawback on creating spiral effect is that it only works well on high-end computers, while on older computers, you may experience retrograde effect. The best solution is to keep the text small.

Stacking/Overlapping/Layering Animations: Translucent Fading

The solution to fading in from 0% to 50% is simple, but depending on what are you fading. As far as I know, the Emphasis (Transparency) animation will never work because it makes an object translucent/transparent immediately. Even if you combine it with Entrance (Fade) or Exit (Fade) animations, the effect will not work effectively. Do take note that this tutorial does not apply to animating the text.

The Stomper Scrutinizer: Web Browser w/Visual Simulation   (members only)

The Stomper Scrutinizer is a webkit based browser that includes a simulation of human foveal and peripheral vision. By providing a realistic distortion of non-focused page content, the Scrutinizer reveals the perceptability of design features. It is also useful for conducting usability tests, design reviews, and has a number of features (including screenshots) for talking about design.

Too Many Pieces

Do you ever think about how much time you spend tackling process issues and tools issues? The tools, as advanced and automated as they are, will not fix all our problems. But we have to work with what we have, and automate as much of the production and maintenance of our content as possible.

Unified Medical Language System

In 1986, the National Library of Medicine (NLM), began a long term research and development project to build a Unified Medical Language System ® (UMLS ® ). The purpose of the UMLS is to aid the development of systems that help health professionals and researchers retrieve and integrate electronic biomedical information from a variety of sources and to make it easy for users to link disparate information systems, including computer-based patient records, bibliographic databases, factual databases, and expert systems. The UMLS project develops 'Knowledge Sources' that can be used by a wide variety of applications programs to overcome retrieval problems caused by differences in terminology and the scattering of relevant information across many databases.

Using Table Cell Borders and Shading in WinHelp

For years, the Microsoft Help Compiler (the one for WinHelp, not HTML Help) has been telling Help authors that we can't use borders or shading or merged cells in the tables we create in our Help topics. But this is actually not true. There is a way. And you don't have to create your tables in a graphics program either. Instead, taking advantage of Word's ability to embed objects created in another application, you can keep your tables “editable” while formatting them to your heart's content with borders and shading. All of this is accomplished using the features of Microsoft Word, so this technique should work with any Word-based authoring tool. As RoboHelp specialists, we have tested the procedure only with RoboHelp versions 5, 6, 7, 2000, 9, and 2002. You can create formatted tables using Word or Excel. Use whichever you prefer.
