Usability Half-Way Round the World

Is usability the same in New York as in China? As I thought about it, this is really two questions: Is our professional practice the same? Are we working from the same basic assumptions about how to approach the job of making products and applications work for their users, and do we use the same techniques and methodologies? Do western usability principles apply to a Chinese audience? Can we apply what we have learned from usability tests in the US and Europe, or are cultural differences so great that we must rethink what usability 'means?'

Usability in Belgium?

Belgium is renowned for scrumptious chocolates, Trappist beers, canals of Bruges, Flemish painters, cathedrals, and the metropolitan city of Brussels. But few people know about the champions of usability.

Usability in Ireland: We're Just Getting Started

Irish e-commerce is in its infancy and we have made many mistakes, but it is still an exhilarating and exciting industry. webBusters estimates that Irish websites are operating at an efficiency and effectiveness level of only 46%, due to shortsightedness and a failure to properly prepare, plan and test work. In this article Jude Murray of webBusters argues a case for usability in Ireland.

Usability: The Irish Experience

Ireland’s meteoric growth and current status as the world’s largest software exporter (larger even than the US) is already the stuff of IT folklore - or at least it is over here in Europe. Such a large and fast-growing industry, which emerged from almost nothing in the space of a dozen years or so, creates an interesting environment for those practicing usability. There is certainly a sizable potential market out there, in the shape of indigenous software houses and major web developments. The question is when the consultancy sector will catch up with them.

User Experience in India

The usability and user experience communities of practice are experiencing great growth and have emerged in countries throughout the world. These developing practices have brought about a huge economic boom in the UX market as both customers and clients are beginning to understand the business benefits they bring. In India, we have undoubtedly seen the growth of these practices. Indian UX companies are delivering designs that satisfy users' needs to their clients.

What Makes a Text Canadian: The Citizenship of Its Author or the Culture-Specific Insight of Its Prose?

Assigning nationality to a text is common practice — a method of categorizing a chaotic assembly of works into easily recognizable, and saleable, slots. The citizenship of an author is considered, by some, to be an adequate marker of the type of texts he or she creates. Yet the notion that Canadian authors produce 'Canadian' texts is problematic and restrictive. It presupposes a definitive Canadian culture on which the author may draw, an inability of the author to supersede his or her cultural inputs, and an acceptance that individual voices can speak for a diverse nation. So why do we gather unlike texts under the 'Canadian' umbrella? Unity is comforting, but diversity is reality in the realm of Canadian literature.

Working with Web Developers in India: Why, Whom, and How

In the past decade or so, multi-national corporations have taken to diverting many of their customer service hotlines to Bangalore and other metropolitan centers in India, primarily as a ”cost-saving measure.“ Yet they’re perpetrating a greater injustice than simply annoying their customers to save a few cents. By giving their distant call center operators little training and even less authority to help customers — as most of them, with a few notable exceptions, seem to do — they’ve left many Westerners with an unfair impression of India as a pool of labor that, while presumably cheap, is apparently unskilled, apathetic, and awkward at communication.

Writing and Publishing a Book in the Japanese Marketplace   (PDF)

Publishing one’s own book by oneself is one of the concrete output of technical communication just like writing a paper and a manual for a company or its client. Right subject, good organization, and easiness of reading are the minimum requirements. The book must be more market-oriented because it will be sold at bookstores and read by consumers as well as specialists. However, having a book published in the Japanese marketplace isn’t easy for two reasons. One is the economic depression. The other is that a publishing company is looking for only a book, which is likely to be sold in numbers. They say, 'Does it sell or not; that’s the question.' internationalization is a long-range issue, the book, when published, could have a relatively long lifetime. The plot of the book were 1) make task analysis of SEs work, 2) check the effect of internationalization upon SEs tasks, and finally 3) explain guidelines, know-how, and English expressions needed by SEs in the international situations. XML Authoring Group

The XML Authoring Group is an informal gathering of technical communication professions in the Research Triangle Park (RTP) area of North Carolina who meet once every two months or so to discuss issues regarding the development of technical content with structure or XML tags. We are not a group of XML programmers and we are not beginners with XML either. We are using XML for developing, delivering, and maintaining technical content, not data.

Your Rights When Being Interviewed

Journalists are bound by federal and provincial laws on privacy, trespassing and defamation. They also have to follow a set of journalistic ethics and codes. The Canadian Association of Broadcasters and the Radio and Television News Directors Association, for instance, have developed several industry codes of ethics to deal with disputes and complaints. As well, media outlets may have their own formal or informal rules or conventions that their reporters must follow. The journalistic standards and practices of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), for instance, can be downloaded from the CBC-Radio Canada web site. Here, we outline: what your rights are, under the law and according to common journalistic standards; what your options are when the law doesn’t protect you; and what to do if your rights are violated.

The Aftermath of the ICT Revolution? Media and Communication Technology Preferences in Finland in 1999 and 2004   (peer-reviewed)   (members only)

It has been predicted that new information and communication technologies (ICTs) will be adopted for increasingly diversified purposes. In general, it has been argued that earlier forms of communication and mass media are being replaced by new ones. Before the early 1990s, however, neither mobile phones nor the internet were widely available to consumers. It is reasonable to ask whether the relatively recent implementation of ICT has shaped our daily practices already as much as many social scientists believe. Is it true that the new forms of technology are considered to be more important than the older ones? What differences can be observed between population groups? This article examines the perceptions of different mass media forms and communication technologies in Finland before and after the turn of the millennium. The data consist of two nationally representative postal surveys conducted in 1999 and 2004.
