The Houston Chapter of STC was formed in 1962 and provides networking, employment, volunteer, and educational opportunities to local and satellite members.
STC Indexing Special Interest Group
The Indexing SIG will enhance members' analytical skills, promote quality and usability concepts, encourage retrievability techniques that increase customer satisfaction, and promote communication between STC members and the indexing community. The Indexing SIG will also give STC members access to information and resources that help them improve their indexing skills and the usability of their documentation products.
STC Instructional Design and Learning Special Interest Group
The Instructional Design & Learning (IDL) SIG helps STC members design, develop, and implement technical instruction in electronic and classroom settings. It promotes sound design practices and educates members about instructional theory, research, and tools. The IDL SIG provides resources to STC members interested in the intersection of technical communication and instructional design, especially in the following areas: Training development and delivery. Research and theory in instructional design and learning. Self-paced training development and delivery, including web-based training (WBT) and computer-based training (CBT). Tools for WBT and CBT.
STC International Technical Communication Special Interest Group
Members exchange information on internationalization, localization, translation, international standards, cross-cultural communication, and technical communication worldwide. Projects include a bibliography and 'kits' of articles on specific topics, including the translation kit. The newsletter is Global Talk Online.
Our STC chapter draws members from throughout the center of the Commonwealth of Virginia; from the upper and middle Shenandoah Valley to the Blue Ridge to the Piedmont to Tidewater. Our members are employees and independent contractors or consultants.

The Lone Writer SIG provides an avenue of professional education, monitoring, and support to writers who are the sole technical writers for their organizations, particularly those that lack in-house resources and assistance on issues concerning their profession.

The Marketing Communication Special Interest Group is a resource designed to help its members network, exchange information, and receive education on marketing and public relations writing for technical products. Members are marketing and public relations writers, editors, specialists, managers, and consultants, as well as technical communicators interested in marketing communication.

STC Policies and Procedures Special Interest Group 
The Policies and Procedures (P&P) Special Interest Group of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) helps members develop, implement, and manage policies and procedures communication. This is accomplished through education and networking opportunities, conference sessions and publications, and interaction with other other STC SIGs and professional organizations in areas of common interest. Policies and Procedures SIG activities include publishing a regular newsletter, presenting conference sessions, developing articles for Society publications on related issues, and providing referrals for information requests. The P&P SIG began in September, 1994, with 60 members. Today, it has more than 850 members from around the world. It is the largest known group specializing in policies and procedures communication.
STC Scientific Communication SIG
The Scientific Communication SIG provides a forum in which STC members can exchange information about publications and presentations related to science or scientific research for a variety of audiences. Scientific Communication SIG activities include publishing The Exchange (the SIG's newsletter), promoting sessions on scientific communication at STC conferences, and developing articles on issues in scientific communication for Intercom and Technical Communication.

A special interest group dedicated to work using a single document source to generate multiple types of document outputs; workflows for creating multiple outputs from a document or database source.
The Southeastern Michigan Chapter (STC/SM) ranges from Jackson, Michigan, to Lansing and Port Huron—with a majority of our members concentrated in the metro Detroit and Ann Arbor areas. Our local chapter provides learning and networking opportunities for technical communicators and supports the international STC organization with its efforts.
