There are a multitude of digital media companies in Brighton and many different networking groups. However there are very few opportunities to talk in detail about design both theory and practice. Let’s see how many people we can get together to form an informal group of user experience / interaction / web designers. The aim would be to meet on a semi regular basis maybe using the 20×20 Pecha Kucha presentation format maybe just bringing in problems / concepts or whatever to discuss in an atmosphere of open collaboration.

The STC Crisis: The Take of a "Young" Writer

As a “young” technical writer, I thought I might share some of my feelings on the STC crisis.First, a little background on me. I knew while I was in college that I wanted to be a technical writer after graduation. I switched to an English major for that purpose, and picked classes that gave me a “technical communication emphasis”. I joined STC while I was in college because I wanted to connect with people in my field. I got a chapter scholarship to attend a regional STC conference, and had a great time meeting people who did for a living what I was studying.

The Technical Communicator's Transformation: Publishing On-Time and On-Quality

Results from Aberdeen’s study of over 360 technical publications department indicate that most organizations adopting topic-based authoring see benefits primarily in terms of project schedule improvements. However, a few see consistent improvements to authoring budgets, localization costs, and the quality of communications. Aberdeen’s research suggests that these differences largely result from how topic-based methodology is implemented and supported. Making the transition to a topic-based authoring requires a dramatic shift in the daily operations of a technical communications department. Meeting the challenges transitioning to a structured authoring approach can result in a wide range of performance benefits. Failing to adequately address these challenges can add an unprecedented layer of complexity that can significantly burden technical communications projects. However, findings ways to successfully evade these obstacles provides the opportunity to achieve greater value from the initiative. This report identifies the attributes most common to the Best-in-Class and provides a guide for organizations attempting to realize the potential of topic-based authoring.

Recent surveys by The Conference Board and the American Management Association show that at least one-half of U.S. companies, and up to 72% of overseas firms, have some kind of knowledge management initiative underway. Other studies put the figure closer to 80% for global corporations. Chief Knowledge Officers and Chief Learning Officers are popping up everywhere. These strategic knowledge initiatives are ushering in a rich array of opportunities for applying OD expertise. This article will first describe the new logic driving interest in knowledge management and then focus on how OD practitioners can participate in that strategic conversation, and support knowledge creation and sharing through building communities of practice.

Good graphical user interface (GUI) design is more important than ever, given the proliferation of software applications and Web sites. GUI design principles were first defined for desktop-oriented software applications, when the Internet was barely known by most software users. Those GUI design principles were later adopted and modified for use in Web design. This article reviews some basic rules of good GUI design in the desktop environment, explores why those rules might differ in the Web environment, and, finally, summarizes the similarities and differences in good GUI design for both environments.
