Technical Communication Research Repository

Technical Communication has not been known as a profession with a particularly strong basis in theory and research. Members of the profession are often too busy solving problems and meeting deadlines to do some of the extra work or document what has been done. This site has been established as a central site to connect those who want to do research, those who want to fund research, and those who have the need for research results. It could pave the way for more and better research in our profession.

  • Researchers seeking funding could connect with those willing to fund research
  • Those seeking to fund specific research projects could connect with those interested in doing the research and capable of doing it
  • Those seeking to do or fund research could connect with those who have successfully done so in the past-helping to pave the way for new collaborations
  • Those seeking to do research could connect with those who have done similar research and learn from their experience
  • Those seeking to do research could examine the research base of what has already been done to identify gaps to be filled

Technical Communication Resource Material

What is Technical Writing? Communicates specific and factual info to a defined audience. Why do it? Inform, instruct, describe, explain processes and mechanisms. Who does it? Engineers, scientists and technicians as necessary part of daily work. Why do we need it? With rising complexity, the greater the need for direct, simple and clear communication. Readers come first. Consider reader before content, approach, style. Reader is either technical, managerial, and/or general. Express vs Impress. More important to convey ideas than impress with vocabulary. Clarity. Shorter sentences and active language.

Technical Communication: What, Why and How

You may not know any of us, but you depend on our work. In the corporate milieu or as freelancers, we create and improve the help files for your computer and the procedures that tell Payroll how to turn your time card into a bank deposit. We work on the grant proposals and business plans that get funding and the reports and articles that tell the world about the results. We do this with CD-ROMs, the Web, and the paper documents that seem to get more important with every new advance in technology. At least this is true when companies understand the benefit of communicating clearly... and the cost of communicating badly. If customers have been overloading a service hotline because a user manual did not meet their needs, or five hundred employees wasted two hours apiece because a memorandum was ambiguous, it’s time to invest in expert services.

Technical Writer's Reference Page

This web site provides reference material for experienced technical writers, but also includes information for beginners and for tech writers looking for a job. This site includes links to various types of reference material, including HTML instruction pages, style guides, technical writing sites, tech writing tools, dictionaries, etc. My goal is to help (English-speaking) persons who are in the business of writing and formatting technical documents. I've reviewed quite a few of the sites to which this page is linked, and have used some of the tools listed.

Technical Writing

I began this document in 1978, when I was teaching undergraduate classes in electrical engineering and found that my students needed some guidance on grammar and style. I enlarged this document frequently during my ten years as a professor. During 1990-95, I shared this document with my colleagues in Germany who wanted to know more about style in American English. The favorable reaction of my former students and my German colleagues has encouraged me to post this document on the Internet, in the hope that it might be useful to a wider audience.
