Path Analysis: A Good Use of Time?
Is doing Path Analysis a good use of time? In my humble opinion the answer is a rather emphatic no, except for one exception (which I'll discuss below). Almost always Path Analysis tends to be a sub optimal use of our time, resources and any money that is expended on buying tools that do 'great' Path Analysis.

PHP is Approaching the End of Its Life Cycle 
PHP while not the top programming language does dominate the web. It is seen as being easy to learn and can be used on any webserver. So PHP is gaining popularity by leaps. But PHP is also approaching the end of its development life cycle. The language itself is close to the point where it can no longer grow. When you look at PHP6 you can see the trend in development is turning towards cleaning up. This is a sure sign that things are close to being finished. That and the fact that all new features have been passed over.

Practicing Safe Visual Rhetoric on the Web 
This essay examines when and why a 'safe' approach to visual design for web pages is attractive to writers and writing teachers. It considers typical reasons for choosing a 'safe' approach to designing the visual dimensions of web pages, traditional sources in print graphics and writing for safe advice about visual design, and design challenges posed by issues of a web design's stability and navigation. The essay then turns to the fact that the additional media included in a web site bring more design traditions into consideration. It discusses the differing concerns and aims that issue from visual design traditions that focus on prose graphics versus those that focus on theatrical graphics. Keeping these differences in mind, the essay ends with a consideration of the forces shaping visual rhetoric on the web.

A Preliminary Report on Two Pilot Readability/Usability Studies
Companies are beginning to conduct readability studies to determine how to provide customers with usable sites. Results have been inconclusive, conflicting, and often contradicting results of printed text studies. To discover how users use web sites, two pilot studies were designed to examine users, their purposes, and their reading processes. Many results parallel those of previous studies. In addition, new results indicate we need to examine several new variables, including amount of usage, site-specific knowledge, conventionalization, print bias, gender and age.
