Evolution of the Emergency Medical Services Profession: A Case Study of EMS Run Reports   (PDF)   (peer-reviewed)   (members only)

Often the first of many documents written about patients, the emergency medical service’s run report is a preprinted form on which providers record the events of an emergency. These forms are important analytically because they represent the practices and interests of the multiple professions engaged in caring for critically ill or injured patients. This article examines the historical evolution of a shared medical form and its impact on the professionals who use it.

Untangling a Jigsaw Puzzle: The Place for Assessment in Program Development   (peer-reviewed)

Assessment has long been a topic of conversation among technical communication teachers and program coordinators. Much has been written about how we assess and respond to work students do in our classrooms. We have also discussed methods to assess programs in technical and scientific communication (TSC). In fact, CPTSC offers a comprehensive self-study and program review. The purpose of the review 'is to help develop strong programs. . . not to compare or rank programs, and not to establish certification for programs or their graduates.' Of course, a focus on developing strong programs rather than ranking programs is an appropriate focus for an organization such as CPTSC.

Workplace Genres as Outcomes of Affiliated Professions' Interests and Practices   (PDF)

Often the first of many documents written about patients, the Emergency Medical Service's run report genre is a preprinted form on which prehospital care providers record the events of an emergency. These forms are important analytically since they represent the evolutionary outcome of the practices and interests of the multiple professions engaged in caring for critically ill or injured patients. Relative positions of power, authority, status, and autonomy among a set of affiliated professions can be examined by studying the historical evolution of a shared workplace genre such as the run report.
